Tour Introduction

Dock Bridge

Morris Canal

Since Newark’s founding in the mid-1600s, the growth and prosperity of the city has been closely linked to the Passaic River. Yet for many decades, the community has been disconnected from the river in virtually every way. With few green spaces in their densely populated city, Newark residents also have a great need for parks. Now, with support from The Trust for Public Land, the city has created a healthy, vibrant riverfront park that is accessible to everyone—connecting people to the Passaic, to the outdoors, and to each other.

Explore Newark Riverfront Park on this tour to learn more about local landmarks, community activities, and Newark’s industrial history. See how this park was designed according to the needs and desires of the community to ensure a sense of creation and ownership is felt by all.

This tour is proudly presented by The Trust for Public Land. The mission of The Trust for Public Land is to create parks and protect land for people, ensuring healthy, livable communities for generations to come. Every park, playground, and public space we create is an open invitation to explore, wonder, discover, and play. We’re proud to say that we’ve been connecting communities to the outdoors—and to each other—since 1972. Today, millions of Americans live within a 10-minute walk of a park or natural area we helped create, and countless more visit every year.
